Born
in Asunción, Paraguay, Lourdes Espínola is a poet, a literary critic and
a cultural journalist. Between 1975 and 1985 she lived in the United
States and was an active member of the cultural arena, being a member of
Modern Language Association, the South Central Modern Language Association,
and Latin American Studies Association. Her
education is in the areas of Science, Humanities, and Literature, having a
BA from North Texas State University, an MS from Southwest Texas State
University, a DDS from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, and a
Doctorate Degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Dr. Espínola
is a full professor at the Universidad del Norte in Paraguay. In
1997, she was invited by USIS to the International Writer’s Program at
the University of Iowa. During that period, she was also a guest poet at
Wellesley College, the University of Miami, and the International
Development Bank at Washington D.C. Dr.
Espínola received an invitation from the French Government as a guest
writer, giving readings and critical panels at the Universities of Caen,
Toulouse Le Mirail, Avignon, Montepellier, and the Sorbonne at Paris. Lourdes
Espínola was founder of the Paraguayan Chapter of the American Studies
Association, and her work published and translated into several languages
in France, Italy, Germany, U.S.A., Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina,
among others. Lourdes
Espínola has published nine books to date. Her more recent titles are Womanhood
and Other Misfortunes (Latitudes Press, U.S.A.), Encre
de Femme (Indigo Editions Paris), and Les
Mots du Corps (Indigo Cote Femmes Paris). Her
work deals with the condition of women and the reflection on womens’
body from a feminist perspective. Her most recent short stories are of a
distinct social nature, pondering upon human rights and freedom. She
won first prize at Sigma Delta Pi literary competition in the U.S., first
place at the Santiago Vilas International Prize in the U.S.A., as well as
first price in La Porte des Poetes Award in Paris, France. Her
short stories have been published in France, Spain and South America. Dr. Espínola was the Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of Paraguay in Madrid, Spain, and is currently at the Embassy of Paraguay in Portugal. |
